Excerpts
“I need a new voodoo doll.”
With her hands on her hips, her spiral curls bounced as she shook her head and gave me an incredulous look. “Uh, hell to the no; and besides, um yeah, Rosie, what in the world do you need a voodoo doll for?”
I waved my hand in the air. “Oh, you know.” A wicked smile creased my face. My laughter almost bubbled to the surface at the quizzical look on her face. “Come on Jahane…you remember what we did when we were little.”
"Oh, no, no, Rosie, you are not going to.” Her voice was full of disbelief.
Hysterical laughter exploded from me as I doubled over and held my sides. “No, Jahane, I wanted some fresh fruit. Satsumas to be exact. I missed the sweet taste of that fresh citrus.” My mouth watered at the thought of peeling the green skin off and biting into the sweetness. I heard her sigh in relief and asked, “Do you seriously think I would have done that to you?" “Well, let’s see…it was you who broke open your piggy bank to exact revenge on the bullies at school.”
Jahane’s response brought long-lost memories to the forefront of my mind. I’d been thrust back in time to days of long ago, and a nervous laugh escaped. “Jahane, you do remember it was your idea to go to the voodoo shop, right?” I cocked my head at her. “And do you remember the look on your mom’s face when she caught us with an assortment of voodoo paraphernalia?”
“Hell, I sure do. My mom was so pissed I thought I would be punished forever.” Then she cackled and imitated her mother. “‘Girls, if you play with voodoo, the spirits will call Marie Laveau herself to reign terror down on y’all.” She laughed so hard at the memory she had to wipe tears from her face.
